Intel, the world's largest semiconductor company, announced plans to buy more than 1.3 billion kilowatt hours a year of renewable energy certificates, surpassing PepsiCo as the largest corporate purchaser of green power in the United States. Last year, Pepsico announced it would purchase 1.1 billion kilowatts of renewable energy.
The certificates will subsidize the development of wind, solar, biomass and small-scale hydro-electric sources of energy. According to an Environmental Protection Agency estimate, Intel's purchase has the equivalent annual impact of taking more than 185,000 passenger cars off the road.
