University of California System adopts Sustainable Practices Policy

On March 22, 2007, the President of the University of California System issued an updated policy on sustainable practices and purchasing. The new policy covers Building Renovations, Climate Protection Practices, Sustainable Operations, Recycling and Waste Management, and Environmentally Preferable Procurement. Product categories covered under Procurement include:

  • ENERGY STAR rated appliances and equipment,
  • EPEAT certified computers
  • Renewable energy
  • Vehicles, fuels, parts, and maintenance
  • Recycled content paper for office and janitorial applications, and
  • Green Seal certified cleaning products

This policy also contains provisions for:

  • Producer take-back and responsible disposal of used electronic equipment,
  • Reduced product packaging,
  • Recycled content, non-toxic, biodegradable packaging, and
  • Development of an action-plan for greenhouse gas emissions reductions.

Success of this policy will be tracked through an annual report from the President to the University’s Board of Regents. To download a copy of the policy, click here.
