RPN Guidance Earns STARS Credit

December 04, 2007

The draft Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS) 0.4 by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) includes 8 possible credits, with a total of twelve points, for environmentally preferable purchasing in the Operations section of the rating system.

To earn the first of those 8 credits, OP Credit 5, a university must adopt a campus-wide environmentally preferable purchasing plan that is consistent with Responsible Purchasing Network (RPN), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Green Guardian Responsible Purchasing Guide, and/or North American Green Purchasing Initiative (NAGPI) guidance.

In the current STARS Draft 0.4, institutions may earn some of the remaining Purchasing credits, OP Credits 6-12, through purchase of Green Seal, ENERGY STAR, EPEAT, and FSC qualified products. Other points are awarded for local and organic food purchases and meat-free dining options.

To learn more about building a successful responsible purchasing plan or the standards referenced in STARS, visit RPN's General Purchasing Guide.
