AASHE Requesting Reviewers for New Campus Sustainability Rating System

November 05, 2007

Source: AASHE

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) is developing a new system that will rate the sustainability of U.S. colleges and universities. The program will allow these institutions to assess and compare their progress towards sustainability goals across a single metric. AASHE is requesting reviewers for its next comment period.

The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System, or STARS, is endorsed by the Higher Education Associations Sustainability Consortium (HEASC). The program, currently in the development phase, is the result of a collaborative effort by higher education institutions and associations; non-profits; businesses; and governmental organizations. After a sampling of institutions pilot the program in early 2008, AASHE plans to release an initial version of STARS the following year.

AASHE is still looking for reviewers to comment on and guide the rating system's development process. There are several comment periods planned throughout the remainder of 2007 and for the majority of 2008. Specifically, AASHE has requested feedback for areas such as social responsibility, diversity, community engagement, and any other topics covered by STARS.

Interested parties should contact Judy Walton, the STARS Project Manager, at (859) 940-2909 (Portland, OR) or judy@aashe.org.

Further information, including current program drafts and development timelines, can be found on the STARS website at www.aashe.org/stars.
