The City of San Jose, CA, an RPN Member and the 10th largest city in the U.S., has just released an ambitious new policy for greening its vehicle fleet. The policy covers both vehicles and heavy equipment and is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and life-cycle costs.

Ken Davies, with San Jose's Office of Sustainability, stated that "RPN's green fleet guidelines and informative webcasts were invaluable resources in helping San Jose develop our new Green Fleet Policy."

The nine-page policy identifies the primary measure of success as reducing vehicle emissions by 25 percent by the year 2012-2013. The policy contains sections that address the following topics:

  1. Establishing a Green Fleet Team;
  2. Taking advantage of funding from internal and external sources to offset incremental costs;
  3. Establishing and periodically updating a fleet inventory;
  4. Establishing a baseline year upon which to compare performance in subsequent years;
  5. Implementing strategies for improved operation, maintenance, and purchasing of fleet vehicles; and
  6. Annual reporting.
