RPN is Expanding!

October 01, 2010

Source: RPN

Since it was first created as a project of the Center for a New American Dream in 2007, the Responsible Purchasing Network (RPN) has been dedicated to helping government agencies, public institutions, and businesses buy products that are safer for people and the planet. The message about the environmental and economic benefits of responsible purchasing has spread quickly. RPN now has over 250 members, including the purchasing departments of every state, and dozens of municipalities, universities and businesses.  Leveraging billions of dollars of purchasing power, RPN’s members are shifting the marketplace toward environmentally sound and socially responsible goods and services.

To better serve you, RPN is teaming up with the staff of the Green Purchasing Institute (GPI), another organization that has been providing technical support directly to states, local governments, school districts and other nonprofit organizations on a wide array of sustainable purchasing initiatives since 2004.

As part of this expansion, RPN is pleased to announce that Alicia Culver will be the new RPN Director. Alicia is the founder and director of GPI and brings over 15 years of experience in this field. She has worked on nearly every aspect of sustainable procurement including policy development, program implementation, specification writing, bid evaluation, outreach and reporting. Alicia is recognized nationally and internationally for her expertise on high-efficiency/low-mercury lighting equipment and “green” cleaners.

Also collaborating with RRN’s team is Susan Kinsella, director of Conservatree. Susan is considered one of the nation’s leading experts on environmentally preferable paper. For the past few years, she has partnered with GPI to provide technical support on projects relating to the procurement of recycled paper products, compostable food service ware, rechargeable batteries and other environmental products.

Phillip Kobernick, the previous RPN Fellow at the Center for A New American Dream will be staying with RPN as the new Manager.  He will be heading the day-to-day operations, including the membership program, as well as contributing to forthcoming RPN publications and Webinars.

To facilitate a smooth transition, RPN has become a project of Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs (SEE), a non-profit management group that oversees the financial aspects of several non-profit organizations. SEE will provide accounting and other administrative services, thus enabling RPN to focus on its core mission of promoting practical, cost-effective, responsible purchasing policies and practices.

These new strategic partnerships will make your RPN membership even more valuable.

We are planning an ambitious year ahead. In the coming months, we will be unveiling several new publications and “Webinars” on exciting new sustainable purchasing topics, including:

  • SAVING GREEN: Environmental Products that Save Money
  • Choosing Products That Earn Green Credits (LEED and STARS)
  • Sustainable Purchasing Policies and Programs
  • EPP Prioritization
  • Asthma-Safe Disinfectants
  • Evaluating Compostable Food Service Ware
  • USDA’s BioPreferred Program
  • San Francisco’s SFApproved List
  • Monitoring Goods for Sweatshop Abuses
  • How to Conduct a Green Cleaning Pilot Test
  • …and much more.
