Director's Corner: When Green is Gold

March 04, 2010

Source: RPN

During the past few weeks, people around the world were filled with national pride and were captivated by the phenomenal feats of the best athletes we have. Marking another proud achievement, the promotion of the Olympic Games as the greenest ever demonstrates just how far the sustainability field has progressed.

The approaches taken every day by institutional purchasers, and increasingly demanded by mandate and stakeholder constituencies, have been reflected in the decisions made by the Olympics.

The medals might have looked different this year, because they were made from recycled electronics. Venues were built to achieve LEED standards. Energy was procured from renewable sources, and there were a variety of additional green measures taken in Vancouver.

We can be proud of the Green Olympic story. Is your institution telling its green story?

RPN will be launching a Model Annual Responsible Purchasing Report Template March 11 as a resource to help your institution formally communicate its accomplishments, identify areas that need improvement, and engage stakeholders in the ongoing process along the way.

We look forward to your participation, and to providing resources that strengthen the impact of your work.
